Yesterday was a moment in Mommyhood that I will not forget...any time soon that is.
Henry was rough housing and goofing around and all of a sudden I hear a thump that shook the house. I dropped what I was doing (cleaning up lunch stuff) and ran into the living room with a "What in the heck was that??" and my Henry comes running to me holding his head.
It is not our first bout with head bumping. When they are little, kids heads just are too big for their bodies and weigh too much for them to be responsible for holding them up all day so many bumps and bruises happen. In fact, Callie hits her head soooo much that I think she may be affecting her IQ-but that is for a much later post.
He runs to me holding his head and as I pick him up I of course am saying, "That is why we told you not to rough house in the tent....." when my friend mouths to me "I think he is bleeding." Initially when I saw the blood I felt a little panic at what I would find UNDER the blood. We get to the bathroom to clean him up, while remaining calm, and he reaches up and touches the spot! Now there is blood all over his hand and running down his arm and he is REALLY FREAKING!!
Once we got him cleaned up we could see that it was a minor bust open and no further medical care would be needed. He was a little dazed and just wanted some lap time and asked for something for his instant headache. Then came the concern...for his skin :) He is asking me "why did my skin just bust open?? That isn't very strong skin is it Mommy?" The rest of the afternoon and night he is asking about germs and skin and blood and infections etc...
I am reminded that while I wanted to cry for my son and his first "Boy Scar", as quickly as it happened it became a learning experience and now we are off to the library for books on cuts, bruises, scabs, blood and bacteria! He is really an amazing little boy. I am glad he is mine!
